Isuppli reports Japanese component shortages fears

JAPAN’S EARTHQUAKE and tsunami, and the resulting aftermath will see shortages of many silicon chips, NAND flash memory, dynamic random access memory (DRAM), microcontroller parts, standard logic chips, liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels, and other electronics parts.

That is according to Isuppli, which added that Japan produces 60 per cent of the world’s silicon based chips and parts and suggested that just about anything that’s electronic will be impacted.

Isuppli also reports that before the disaster “semiconductor inventories in the global semiconductor supply chain were at high levels”. So it seems that the market research firm does not expect shortages to appear for a few weeks yet.

Toshiba, Hitachi and Fujitsu have put out official statements about the impact of the crisis. Toshiba has said that it is scaling back its activities. Fujitsu has identified plants in the affected Tohoku region with “damage to buildings and production equipment”. They are a fab in the Iwate area, a Fujitsu Integrated Microtechnology facility in Miyagi and more fabs and microtechnology facilities in Fukushima, where the failing nuclear reactors are also located.

Planned power blackouts have also affected Fujitsu in the Kanto region. Panasonic hasn’t put out a statement in English on its global website yet, but Isuppli says its LCD television plant is near the earthquake’s peripheral zone.
